     The original Bookstand was developed in Camden, Maine in the mid 20thcentury by Bill Conrad Sr. for use in his internationally known bookstore, The Owl and the Turtle.  One day, Bill was disturbed to find that the available display units for individual books were harming the books and spines in his store.  This was the inspiration behind the multi-use stand we know today. 

     Currently, the Bookstands are manufactured by Bill Conrad Jr. and his wife, Jan.  With only a few variations from the original Bookstand, they are used all over the world to display books, as well as other pieces of art and culture.
